Erling Haaland helped Manchester City to a hard-fought victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. The Norwegian scored the only goal on behalf of the number two in the Premier League from the penalty spot.
Manchester City created little visiting Crystal Palace and were helped somewhat by a fumbled foul from Michael Olise. The Crystal Palace midfielder wanted to press after a short corner from City and clumsily brought down Ilkay Gundogan in the process.
It provided Manchester City with the ideal opportunity to score from the penalty spot. The opportunity was seized by 22-year-old Haaland, who scored his 28th goal of the season.
With his goal in London, Haaland is one step closer to the record for most goals in a single Premier League season. That record is held by Alan Shearer (Blackburn Rovers, 1994/1995) and Andy Cole (Newcastle United, 1993/1994). They scored 34 goals in one season.
22-year-old Haaland still has eleven games to beat the record. In any case, this is already the most productive season of his career. His previous league personal best came in the 2020/21 season when he scored 27 Bundesliga goals for Borussia Dortmund.
Thanks to the victory over Crystal Palace, Manchester City remains in the footsteps of leader Arsenal, who will play against Fulham on Sunday. The difference between the two teams in the ranking is currently two points.
