Xi Jingping has vowed to work for a “modern and powerful” China as he is sworn in for a third term as president. With one fist raised and the other hand on the Chinese constitution, the president has vowed to “put a lot of effort into building a modern and powerful socialist country.”
Xi, 69, thus culminates a rise that has made him the most powerful and longest-serving leader of the Asian giant in several generations.
The vote was 2,952 votes in favor and 0 against, in the National Popular Assembly, whose members are appointed by the ruling party. The Chinese president has also been unanimously appointed commander of the 2 million-strong People’s Liberation Army.
