War map | Ukraine will continue to defend Bakhmut

The Ukrainian authorities have indicated that the country will continue to defend Bakhmut for the time being and reinforcements will be sent. According to the Institute for War, the city is not significant at an operational or strategic level. Taking it is necessary but not sufficient for Russia to continue advancing in the Donetsk region.

Kiev’s intention is to continue causing losses among Russian troops, especially elite units that are destined for the attempt to take Bakhmut, so that they cannot be used in more important operations in the future in territories of greater strategic importance.
