In 2011, Germany had 24.6 million faithful. It only counted 21.6 million in 2021: in ten years, just over 3 million have left the Church. The German faithful must then ask to be removed from its administrative registers. Access to the sacraments is restricted to them and they therefore stop paying the religious tax.
For the year 2021 alone, 360,000 Catholics have decided to leave the Church – about 86,000 more than in 2019, the previous record year. The country had 12,280 priests and 3,253 deacons in Germany for 9,790 parishes.
19.7 million Protestant Christians also belong to the Evangelical Church in Germany (Lutherans). This Church is also experiencing disaffection, with 270,000 departures in 2019.
