At least six Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli army raid on Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. They are between 22 and 49 years old, reports the Palestinian Ministry of Health. At least 16 Palestinians were also injured.
On the Israeli side, four are injured. Among the dead, according to the Israeli army, is a Hamas member suspected of shooting two brothers in a Jewish settlement near Huwara a week and a half ago.
Israeli forces surrounded a house in Jenin yesterday, killing the suspected gunman. The army also says it captured two of his sons in a simultaneous raid on the nearby city of Nablus.
Revenge for shooting
Last week, in revenge for the brothers’ deaths, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians in Huwara, also setting fire to buildings and cars.
Last night a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel. The air raid alarm then went off and people went to shelters. According to the Israeli army, it appears that the rocket did not land on Israeli territory, but in Gaza itself.
More than 60 Palestinians have been killed at the hands of the Israeli army this year, according to the AP news agency. Palestinians have killed 14 Israelis in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, AP calculated. According to the Reuters news agency, 70 Palestinians and 13 Israelis have been killed this year.
The West Bank
Israel captured the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in 1967 along with the Gaza Strip. Israel has occupied the area ever since. In parts of it, Palestinians have a form of self-government. About three million Palestinians live in the West Bank. In addition, more than 600,000 Israeli settlers now live there. Under international law, the settlements in which they live are illegal.
Many Palestinians see the West Bank as part of their future state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, even though the prospect of it is shrinking. Serious peace negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian leaders have not been held for more than a decade.
