Krishna Romero, federal deputy for the National Action Party (PAN), seeks to punish anyone found guilty of the crime of “feminicidal suicide” with up to 15 years in prison, for which, on the eve of World Women’s Day , promoted an initiative to modify the Federal Penal Code (CPF) and where this crime is contemplated.

In order to materialize this purpose, the ITAM teacher explained this Tuesday, March 7, what she means by this new term that she wants to annex to the CPF, as well as the importance of this modification, since she detected that there is an opprobrious system for the development of well-being Women’s.
In order to classify suicide as a femicide, Romero Velázquez specified that the person who commits it or attempts to commit it is not persecuted, but rather the person who promotes it, either by persuasion or by establishing a hostile environment against women, leading them to threaten their integrity or life.

“The induction and death by suicide in women are often linked to despair due to mistreatment and sexual, physical, family, emotional or psychological violence that they suffer and suffer, femicide suicide being a problem that has been little visualized, in which the aggressor, not being the one who materializes the crime, can go unpunished.
To justify the need to implement this adaptation to the Mexican legal framework, the PAN member said that, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), in recent years suicides in women have increased, mainly between 15 and 29 years of age. . The suicide rate per 100 thousand inhabitants in this population sector increased from 2016 to 2021 by 45%, going from 3.3 to 4.8.

As if this were not enough, the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) discovered that in 2022 various indicators of violence against women increased in relation to 2021, so making visible and penalizing “femicide suicide” will allow women to State institutions to be able to treat both victims and their relatives and prevent this type of crime.
For example, the SESNSP found that some types of violence against women in Mexico grew by more than 50% in one year: sexual harassment increased 56%, sexual harassment 38%, human trafficking 27%, gender violence 32%, and sexual abuse. 21 percent.

Regarding comparative law, Krishna Romero pointed out that in countries such as El Salvador and Chile, as well as federal entities of our country such as Jalisco and Yucatán, they have made progress in their legislation penalizing those who induce, force or help a woman to deprive herself of life for gender reasons after having suffered any type of violence.
“The legislators of the Congress of the Union have the obligation to promote initiatives that help adopt all possible measures to guarantee the greatest protection of the integrity and life of women”
It should be remembered that, although Mexico is one of the countries with the most legislation on gender equality and the prevention of violence against women, it is also one where women are raped and killed the most. According to Victoria Alva, PhD in Law and Globalization, the exercise of violence against women lies more in the context, education and the discourses that are replicated in the cultural industries, than in the national legal scaffolding.
