The Uruguayan coach pointed out that he prefers that the tape be carried by a field player.
José Carvallo has spent several seasons as captain of Universitario de Deportes. However, this could change with the arrival of coach Jorge Fossati. In his presentation as a ‘cream’ coach, the Uruguayan pointed out that he prefers that the person who wears the ribbon be a field player, in addition, he stated that he has nothing against the goalkeepers, since he performed in that position during his time of footballer.

“On Sunday I start talking about the team and my decisions. Right now I have nothing against it, but well, we’ll see after we take over the squad, first who’s playing, then who’s going to be the captain. Yes, I am going to advance something from now on, I was a goalkeeper and they gave me the responsibility, in more than one team, not only in my country, but abroad, of being the captain, from my point of view it is not ideal. I prefer field captain, ”he emphasized.

The 70-year-old coach based his decision on the fact that goalkeepers are often far from situations in which the captain’s work is required, such as protesting to the referee, participating in a riot or giving instructions to teammates. On the other hand, he stressed that the teams have several captains, so whoever wears the tape is only the captain of the field.

“There are several captains in the squads, but pitch captain, I prefer a pitch player. If he plays midfield, better, or if he plays forward. This is because I do not want him to be 50 meters from his place, going to protest or going to get into trouble, because that is what the captain’s belt requires, ”he said.
Finally, Jorge Fossati made it clear that he has nothing against José Carvallo, as this is a policy that he put into practice in all the teams he led throughout his 30 years as a coach: “This is generally what that I have applied in all my equipment, I resist files, go back and look at all my equipment”, he assured.
Jorge Fossati worked as a goalkeeper in his soccer days.
If José Carvallo’s captaincy is withdrawn, the main alternatives to wear the belt are the following:
It may interest you: Jorge Fossati was presented in Universitario: “I have never promised results. He who offers them understands little of this.”
Aldo Corzo: He has been at Universitario for seven seasons and has been one of the team’s captains since 2019. This 2023 began as a substitute for Hugo Ancajima, but with the arrival of Jorge Fossati he has an opportunity to recover the position and therefore the tape as one one of the most experienced and identified with the club.
Luis Urruti: The Uruguayan winger has been with the club since 2020, in recent years he became one of the most beloved footballers by the fans, although he was unable to exploit his full potential due to constant injuries. He has always shown to have temperament and to be one of the most decisive players when he was physically fit, so he would have a chance to be captain.
Aldo Corzo is one of the current captains of Universitario.
Horacio Calcaterra: Although he is more identified with Sporting Cristal, where he became captain, the Argentine is, along with José Carvallo, the only one on the squad who knows what it is to be a champion with Universitario, since he was part of the 2013 squad. He has a lot of experience in Peruvian soccer and plays in midfield, a position that Jorge Fossati admitted he prefers for his captains.
Álex Valera: Although he had a difficult start to the year, he was the team’s top scorer and player last year. This course is in his third season at University, so he has enough experience to carry the tape. In addition, fulfilling the role of nine goalscorer can give him some authority over the squad.
Piero Quispe: Although he lost the position to Carlos Compagnucci, the 21-year-old midfielder is one of the players with the greatest projection on the squad. Despite his youth, he has shown the character to stand up in difficult moments like the classics and he has the affection of the fans.
Andy Polo: He is one of the footballers most identified with Universitario, since he came out of the minor divisions and despite the fact that he played many years abroad, he never stopped professing his love for the ‘cream’. He was captain in the friendly against Curicó Unido and has the experience of being a World Cup player. What plays against him are his personal problems, related to family violence, so his appointment as captain could be seen as a bad example.
