FC Twente relinquished a seemingly certain victory in the Eredivisie on Saturday evening. The team of retiring coach Ron Jans lost a 3-1 lead against sc Heerenveen in the second half: 3-3.
The mood at FC Twente has not been great in recent weeks due to defeats against Go Ahead Eagles (2-0) and PSV (3-1). Moreover, it was announced on Friday that Joshua Brenet has been removed from the selection due to a bad reaction to his substitution against PSV.
FC Twente already had a false start against Heerenveen. A corner in the 25th minute went through the leg of Twente defender Mees Hilgers and went into the roof of the goal. Shortly afterwards, Sem Steijn got a dot of a chance at 1-1, but he shot hard over in a promising position.
The equalizer came moments later. Robin Pröpper headed in from a corner by Václav Cerný. Shortly after the break, Twente even took the lead with fortune. Due to a slide by Jeffrey Bruma, Manfred Ugalde, who had just come on, could only approach goalkeeper Xavier Mous and he made no mistake.
Less than ten minutes later, the difference was already two goals. Ricky van Wolfswinkel broke through on the left and passed to Cerný, who ran in the ball. Heerenveen made it exciting again thanks to a nice goal from Milan van Ewijk – he nicely accepted a cross from Anas Tahiri and passed Lars Unnerstall – and the equalizer also fell in the ninetieth minute. Rami Kaib headed in from a corner.
FC Twente loses the connection with number four PSV due to the draw. The team from Eindhoven has five points more and will play an away game against RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.
