Three days after the embarrassing cup defeat against Spakenburg, FC Utrecht suffered another painful loss. The Domstedelingen lost 1-2 to Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie on Friday.
Utrecht and Fortuna did not make a spectacle of it in the first half. After the break, Anastasios Douvikas broke the spell. Goalkeeper Ivor Pandur saved a header from Mike van den Hoorn, but was unable to parry the Greek’s rebound.
The home team could not enjoy the lead for long. Kristijan Bistrovic got the ball through the scramble, was not stopped by the defenders of Utrecht and was able to shoot in complete freedom: 1-1.
The duel in De Galgenwaard seemed to be heading for a draw, but Tijjani Noslin took care of the three points for Fortuna just before time. Zakaria Labyad had a basic place at Utrecht. He appeared at the kick-off of an Eredivisie match for the first time since January 24, 2021.
The defeat meant the second disappointment for Utrecht in a few days. The formation of trainer Michael Silberbauer blamed itself on Tuesday in the KNVB Cup with a 1-4 defeat against the amateurs of Spakenburg.
Utrecht remains seventh in the Eredivisie due to the loss. Fortuna climbs to eleventh place, but Go Ahead Eagles can pass the Limburg team again on Sunday if the team from Deventer win at SC Cambuur.
