Tony van Diepen failed to qualify for the semi-finals at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Istanbul on Thursday. The Dutchman finished third in his heat in the series. Bram Buigel also stranded in the series.
The first two of each heat and the two fastest times advanced to the semi-finals. The 26-year-old Van Diepen ran the third fastest time in his heat with 1.48.50, but that was nowhere near enough for a semi-final place.
Van Diepen won silver in the 400 meters at the previous European Indoor Championships and gold in the 4×400 meters with the Dutch relay team. He is still waiting for a medal at a major tournament in the 800 meters. At the World Outdoor Championships in the American Eugene, the North Hollander reached the semi-finals of the 800 meters last year.
At the end of last year, Van Diepen caused a stir by accusing former coach Charles van Commenée of encouraging the use of a dubious thyroid medication. Van Commenée therefore filed summary proceedings against the athlete, but that was later withdrawn.
The 27-year-old Buigel also finished third in his series, having led for 700 meters. The debutant from Groningen was a lot faster than Van Diepen with 1.47.95, but his time was also not enough to continue as one of the fastest.
The European Indoor Championships started on Thursday and lasts until Sunday. Later on the opening day, high jumper Britt Weerman and shot putter Jessica Schilder, among others, will be in action.
