Chica’s murder was perpetrated with a knife when she was moving through the Villa Esperanza sector in the aforementioned Antioquia municipality, Indepaz reported.

They added that this person was recognized in the community for his work as a leader and defender of labor rights. In addition, he worked as a union leader of the Colombian Association of Bank Employees and an employee of a financial institution in the municipality.

While the crime of Milton Rocha occurred on Saturday night on the road that connects the San Valentín village with San Sebastián, where the social leader was shot, the Magdalena Governor’s Office reported in a statement.

The organization explained that this crime occurs in a context in which, for more than five years, peasant families from the corregimiento (hamlet) of San Valentín, jurisdiction of San Sebastián, have been occupying land that is in the process of being studied and clarified about the legal situation. .

“The San Valentín community has suffered threats, intimidation and now the crime of Milton Rocha Peña, one of the main leaders in the process of recovering the land they work,” they added.

For this reason, he requested that criminal investigations be carried out to clarify the murder of the community leader.

And it is that according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Colombia was the country in which the most murdered social leaders were reported with 46 victims in 2022.

Of these cases, 26 were confirmed and 20 more are in the verification process. Most of the profiles correspond to indigenous, Afro-descendant, and environmental leaders. Only in the last two months of the year, the IACHR recorded eight murders.
