Wout van Aert has signed out for next Saturday’s Strade Bianche. The Belgian from Jumbo-Visma, who has been ill for a few days, is not yet in top shape, so a new duel with Mathieu van der Poel is not forthcoming for the time being.
“I was not very ill, after a few days I was better,” says Van Aert on social media on Monday. “But, after a few days of rest after the Cyclo-cross World Cup, I lost a few days in the build-up to the new season. It is now better to train a few more days in Tenerife, I can’t be at my best yet in the Strade Bianche.”
The 28-year-old Van Aert, who won the Italian one-day race in 2020, is currently still in a training camp in Tenerife, after finishing his cyclo-cross season three weeks ago with a second place at the World Cup.
Van Aert has now shifted the start of his road season from the Strade Bianche to the Tirreno-Adriatico. The Italian stage race starts in a week and lasts until March 12. “I hope to keep growing in the Tirreno, so that I can eventually ride for the win.”
