The members of the G7 reaffirmed on Friday their commitment to Ukraine in the aggression that it is suffering.
All countries pledged to continue supporting Ukraine financially and with weapons, while maintaining the sanctions path.
The German chancellor has also announced that he will provide more Leopard tanks.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholzhas stressed: “Unfortunately, even after a year of war and bloodshed, I do not see any effort on the part of Russia to end this criminal war. On the contrary, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin continues to maintain a irresponsible behavior in nuclear matters and is now calling into question the last disarmament treaty on strategic nuclear weapons, the treaty with the United States.”
The US president, for his part, has sought to ease tensions with China, arguing that “there is no evidence” that Beijing is supplying arms to Russia.
The meeting took place a few hours after the General Assembly of the HIM pass a resolution on Thursday calling for the “cease-fire” in Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian troops, with 141 countries voting in favor, 7 against and 32 abstaining.
The central point of the resolution is the fifth, which asks Russia for “an immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of all its Military Forces from Ukrainian territory within its internationally recognized borders”, and then calls for a “cessation of hostilities”.
The leaders of Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States expressed their “unity” so that Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials render accountable before the Justice for the war in Ukraine.
They affirmed, therefore, that they support the investigations of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the General Prosecutor of Ukraine.
In the resolution the G7 also warns that any use by Russia of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons will have “severe consequences” and criticized the “unacceptable nuclear rhetoric” that Russia is displaying, they added.
In this regard, they acknowledged their concern about the country’s exit from the New Start treaty and its control of the Zaporizhia plant.
“Russia started this war and Russia can end this war. We call on Russia to stop its ongoing aggression and immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw its troops from the entire internationally recognized territory of Ukraine,” they added.
