President Zelensky, who is planning a press conference on Friday, paid tribute to Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines and to those who died in combat, during a decorations ceremony held in the morning in the forecourt of Saint Sophia’s Cathedral from Kyiv.
Other commemorations have taken place locally. In Boutcha, a martyr city near Kiev hard hit by the Russian occupation, Ukrainians paid tribute on Friday to the victims of the war that began a year ago with the invasion of troops from Moscow.
The graves dug in recent weeks, on which are placed wreaths of flowers and Ukrainian flags, shelter the bodies of soldiers killed in recent months, testimonies of the tribute paid by this small town of 30,000 inhabitants.
Ukraine enters its second year of war against Russian forces on Friday, marking the first anniversary of an invasion against which it displayed fierce resistance and, with the help of the West, inflicted unexpected setbacks on Vladimir Putin.
