Erik ten Hag experienced a new highlight with Manchester United on Thursday. The team of the Dutch coach eliminated FC Barcelona in the intermediate round of the Conference League thanks to a goal by Antony: 2-1.
After last week’s 2-2 draw at Camp Nou, things did not look good for United at half time at Old Trafford. Barcelona led by a striking penalty from Robert Lewandowski. Keeper David de Gea just couldn’t stop the bet.
Early in the second half, Fred signed for the equalizer on behalf of United by shooting on a pass from Bruno Fernandes. When entering the final phase, Antony had the floor. The former Ajax player found the far corner after a deflected ball and scored his first goal since January 10.
With Frenkie de Jong in the team, Barcelona squeezed out a final offensive in vain. The equalizer was almost a fact in extra time, but Raphaël Varane was the saving angel for United on the line.
At United, Wout Weghorst had a basic place as an attacking midfielder, just like last week. He was substituted at halftime. Ten Hag kept Tyrell Malacia on the bench. At Barcelona, De Jong completed the match.
