At least nine Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli army raid on a West Bank town, Palestinian health officials say. The Israeli army has confirmed that it has carried out an operation in the city of Nablus, but has not provided further details.
The victims include several civilians, including a 72-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy, Palestinian authorities say. Members of militant groups were also reportedly killed. According to the Palestinians, about 100 people were also injured.
Israel and Palestinian territories correspondent Nasrah Habiballah:
“Iraids by the Israeli army in the West Bank are not new, but you can see that more and more victims are being killed. Palestinian armed groups are fighting the Israeli army, resulting in regular deaths. Fewer and fewer Palestinians still believe in diplomacy, and so those armed militant groups are getting more and more support from the Palestinian population.”
It has been unsettled in the West Bank for a long time. Last month, Israeli troops killed at least nine Palestinians in a similar operation in the north of the West Bank. It was the deadliest Israeli action in the West Bank in 20 years.
