Genaro García Luna, a former Mexican security minister, has been convicted of drug trafficking by a US jury. García Luna was once the face of Mexico’s war on drugs. He was found guilty of taking millions of dollars from the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel.
García Luna, 54, was arrested in 2019 in the US state of Texas and faces up to ten years in prison. He says himself that he is innocent.
The US court’s ruling came after a four-week trial in New York. According to prosecutors, García Luna accepted millions of dollars and they were delivered in suitcases by cartel members.
