The names of 1,010 shot are inscribed on the commemorative monument erected at Mont Valérien, the main execution site in the Paris region during the Second World War.
These French or foreigners, members of Resistance networks or movements, were sentenced to death by German military courts. Some, mainly Jews and Communists, were shot in retaliation for acts against the German army.
Shortly before their execution, “They are usually allowed to write one last letter. The visit of the German chaplain offers them an ultimate opportunity to confide in each other, and for those who wish, to commune, ”explains the Mont Valérien site.
In the crypt of the Mont Valérien memorial are the remains of seventeen combatants “died for France”, including Hubert Germain, buried on November 11, 2021, in vault no. 9 which remained free to accommodate the last companion of the Liberation.
