This February 18 was scheduled to take place at the Centro de Arte y Cultura Circo Volador, the one planned for the black metal band Satanic Warmaster. However, the Mexico City authorities definitively canceled it a day before for allegedly “promoting racial hatred, segregation and discrimination.”

The event would take place this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the facilities of the property located in Calzada de la Viga, Jamaica neighborhood, in the Venustiano Carranza mayor’s office. It was through an official statement issued by the Secretary of the Government of Mexico City, Martí Batres Guadarrama.

The issued document was addressed to the Flying Circus where it was requested that the referenced event not take place, because according to the official and his arguments “its holding would not be consistent with the defense of human rights that we promote in the City, but rather that violate the dignity of people, non-discrimination and multiculturalism”, he pointed out.

The publication was made by the Flying Circus and attached its response in this regard in another document where the imminent suspension of the concert was also confirmed. They explained that the causes were clearly beyond their control, the band and the promoters, so the money for the tickets would be refunded as soon as possible directly at the venue box office.

So far, the black metal band from Finland has not commented on the matter, because the last publication they made on their Facebook and Instagram accounts was a photograph at their recent concert offered in Guatemala. It should be noted that Satanic Warmaster was on a tour of Latin America entitled “Los bárbaros en Latinoamérica”, where they toured countries such as Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico would be where they would close their presentations.

The cancellation really came as a surprise to fans who had already purchased their tickets and expected to see the Finns live. According to unofficial statements that circulated through networks, they did not expect that the band would not be able to perform in the country, since in 2017 Satanic Warmaster had already had some concerts in front of a Mexican audience.

Who are Satanic Warmaster?

It is a band that belongs to the genre of black metal, formed in 1999 in the city of Lappeenranta located on the shore of one of the largest lakes in the country, in southern Finland.

Lauri Penttilä, known under the pseudonym “Satanic Tyrant Werewolf”, was the one who started the recordings with Satanic Warmaster. About their music and specifically the group’s lyrics, it could be said that they dealt with satanism, blasphemy, violence, terrorism and wars. Among the collaborations that the vocalist and leader of the band has had, groups that define black emtal such as Burzum and Mayhem, to mention just a few, stand out.

Most of Satanic Warmaster’s discography was recorded and released under Lauri Penttilä’s label, Satanic Tyrant Werwolf called “Werewolf Records”.

This would not be the first time they have been canceled or expelled from an event. One of the most notorious and controversial cases that the Finnish band has faced was the one that occurred in 2011, when the poster for one of the most internationally recognized festivals Hellfest was unveiled, which takes place in Clisson, France.

Because Satanic Warmaster, since their beginnings in the music industry they have been associated with National Socialism, Fascism and have even been accused of being Nazi sympathizers due to some lyrical content, images and interview comments made by members of the group. some years ago.

For this reason, Hellfest allegedly contacted the band to play in that year’s edition and included them in the official festival program, however they were withdrawn on the eve of the big event.

It was then that through a statement from the group, the leader Werwolf stated that he was already expecting some kind of confrontation of this type, but he never thought that the band would categorically lose the opportunity to play and share the stage with artists of the stature of Iggy and the Stooges, Ozzy Osbourne and Bad Brains, among others.

“It is disappointing (despite being fully expected) to see such a mentality still present in the ‘individualistic’ and ‘freethinking’ metal community that any musical act can still be boycotted due to false preconceptions and arbitrary political motivations of others, ‘greatest’ and ‘artists. It is also more than amusing to see that the censorship and boycott that some of the French authorities tried to promote before at the festival are now exercised by the festival organization itself.”
