Leon (Mexico), 16 Feb. The coach of the women’s team of Mexico, the Spanish Pedro López, assured this Wednesday that his team will not celebrate the victory against Nigeria in the Women’s Revelations Cup because that would be mediocrity.
“I don’t want anything to be celebrated today because we would be a mediocre team. If we are celebrating by winning a game, we would be a team that does not aspire to more and I aspire to beat Costa Rica,” said the coach.
In their debut in the international tournament, in León, central Mexico, the Mexican team beat Nigeria 1-0 with a goal from Kiana Palacios, with a header in the 85th minute.
“Behind all this there is a lot of work and in the end if you do not get a good result, it seems that you have not worked well,” acknowledged the strategist who took command of the team at the end of 2022, after the failure in the Olympic and World Cup qualifiers.
The strategist recognized that it is difficult to be able to give minutes to all his players, as a result of which, some in good shape remain on the bench.
“We are going to go out to win; each lineup is going to be the best to be able to beat Costa Rica and Colombia. I have brought 26 players, I count on all of them, each one is different and contributes to you in different situations,” he added.
With this Wednesday’s victory, the Mexicans jumped to first place in the tournament, after the 1-1 draw between Colombia and Costa Rica.
By failing at the hands of the coach Mónica Vergara in the tie, Mexico was left out of the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, this year, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
For López and his players, the Revelations Cup is a good experience because the other three teams have qualified for the World Cup and they are a good measure of Mexico’s level.
On Saturday, in the second day, the Mexicans will face Costa Rica and Colombia against Nigeria.EFE
