Despite the continuous claims of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), the president finally declared that he will not promote any reform that could “purify it from corruption.”

From his traditional morning conference, the Head of the Mexican Executive recognized that only the ministers of the Court are responsible for promoting an eventual reform. This, he asserted, due to the autonomy of the Judiciary currently chaired by the Minister President, Norma Lucía Piña.
“No, not in our government (the Judicial Reform will be promoted), because we maintain that this reform must be promoted by the same members of the Judiciary”

It should be remembered that the Mexican president has repeatedly occupied the lectern of the National Palace to criticize the third Power of the Union for allegedly overlapping “corrupt and colluding judges”, especially those who release alleged criminals.
AMLO ruled out a meeting with the Minister President Norma Piña and accused that “they manipulated my words”
President López Obrador said that there are currently no issues to discuss with the minister in her capacity as president of the SCJN, so she does not plan to meet unless necessary.
It was on November 24, 2022, when Andrés Manuel proposed promoting a reform to the Judiciary at the initiative of the ministers to regulate the actions of judges and magistrates. Since then, AMLO recognized that neither the Executive nor the Legislature can intervene in said initiative: “It has to come from within,” he said that morning.
In addition to this argument, López Obrador commented that another of the reasons why he will decline to present said reform is to avoid being singled out for an alleged interest in disappearing the SCJN; as it happened with the Electoral Reform and the National Electoral Institute (INE), he asserted.
“We do not want to give reasons for the adversaries, conservatives, corrupt to say that we want to disappear the Judiciary. (…) We are not going to fall for that”.
