James Flynn, co-founder of Metropolitan Films and producer of the recent Oscar-nominated film The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), passed away. The filmmaker turned 57 years old.
Flynn died last Saturday in Dublin from the effects of an unknown illness, his production company tells The Hollywood Reporter. He died in the presence of his wife Juanita Wilson and their children Alex and Anna. Metropolitan Films emphasizes the loss in a statement.
James fought his recent illness with courage, dignity, positivity and discretion to the very end. For that reason, we are aware that the news of his passing came as an unexpected shock to all of us and to many people inside and outside the industry.
Flynn’s death comes during the successful awards season for his latest film The Banshees of Inisherin, which was recently nominated for a whopping nine Oscars. In March it will become clear whether the film can also take some frames home.
Flynn also worked as an executive producer on series like Vikings (2013–2020) in Vikings: Valhalla (2022– ) and produced Ridley Scott’s film The Last Duel (2021) with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
