Church figures caught up in sexual violence scandals

Louis Ribes. This priest and painter from Lyon, who died in 1994, is accused of having raped and sexually assaulted dozens of children. Complaints escalated in 2022.

Marko Rupnik. This influential Slovenian priest and mosaicist was sanctioned by the Church for sexual assaults on nuns, within the framework of confession, from 1985.

John Vanier. The founder of L’Arche trained the women he accompanied spiritually in sexual relations under the influence, with the same mystical justifications as his mentor Thomas Philippe, according to the 25 testimonies – not exhaustive – examined by an independent commission (report published on January 31).

Andre Gouzes. The Dominican, 79, known for his liturgical creations, was the subject of a report to justice for suspicion of rape on a minor. Facts that date back to the end of the 2000s.
