Singer Jeangu Macrooy will play the role of Jesus in a new Dutch version of the hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Producer Albert Verlinde announced this on Monday.
Director Ivo van Hove says he is very impressed by the singer. He calls Jeangu “our dream protagonist”. The former Eurovision participant in turn speaks of a “dream role”. “It’s a story that everyone knows and the songs are fantastic. I’ve been a big fan of director Ivo van Hove’s work for years and I think it’s special to be able to work with him now.”
The musical, which was first performed in 1972, is about the last days of Jesus. The music was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The lyrics are by Tim Rice. The play ran continuously in the West End and on Broadway for many years. The original album has sold over seven million copies.
The premiere of the new version is on January 21, 2024 at the DeLaMar Theater in Amsterdam.
