Amteurclub SV Spakenburg qualified for the quarterfinals of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Wednesday. The Tweede Divisionist beat competitor VV Katwijk after penalties. Regular time ended in 1-1.
Spakenburg took the lead over Sportpark De Westmaat ten minutes before the break with a goal from Floris van der Linden, who scored his fourth goal in the cup tournament. Killian van Mil equalized in the sixtieth minute. After no goals were scored in extra time, the penalty shootout ended 3-1.
It is the seventh time this century that an amateur club has qualified for the last eight of the cup tournament. Quick Boys (2007/2008), Noordwijk (2010/2011) GVVV (2011/2012), JVC Cuijk (2013/2014), HHC Hardenberg (2015/2016) and VVSB (2015/2016) preceded Spakenburg.
Spakenburg had also caused a stunt in the previous round by beating FC Groningen. The team from the fishing village was 2-3 too strong for the ‘Pride of the North’ in the Eurborg.
Earlier in the evening, PSV also qualified for the quarter-finals. The team of coach Ruud van Nistelrooij won 3-1 against FC Emmen. Feyenoord-NEC is still on its way. FC Utrecht (1-2 win over AZ), De Graafschap (3-0 win over De Treffers) and sc Heerenveen (1-2 win over NAC) already joined the last eight on Tuesday.
The last eighth finals are scheduled for Thursday with FC Twente-Ajax and ADO Den Haag-Go Ahead Eagles. The draw for the quarterfinals will be held on Saturday evening.
