The “man of the Dane”, as Juan Daniel Oviedo is colloquially known, made it official and launched himself as a candidate for mayor of Bogotá. On the morning of this Tuesday, February 7, from the Enrique Olaya Herrera National Park, in the heart of the capital, he met with several of his possible voters to begin requesting the signatures that will allow him a space in the first round of the district elections. Former minister Diego Molano officially launched himself as a candidate for mayor of Bogotá: he promised to “defend the metro”
The former Defense Minister also asked Claudia López to call a referendum to defend the construction of the first metro line
The first support that the former director of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) received during the government of Iván Duque was from his mother, Nidia Naranjo, who was excited to become the first citizen to support Oviedo in his wishes to succeed to Claudia López in what is considered the second most important popular election position in Colombia.
“The first and most important signature is from that person who inspires and generates great confidence, who is my mother. She has a history of difficulties that has allowed us to share this city project that we want to offer to the public,” said Oviedo.

The event was attended by several other Bogotanos who came to that emblematic sector of the capital to support Oviedo in his first attempt at electoral politics. As some of them asked him for photos and congratulated him on his aspiration, the current disputant of the Liévano Palace was grateful.
“That is what motivates me the most to participate in this democratic process for the mayor of Bogotá. People are seeing that there is an awareness of being able to serve and be useful to all citizens. Above all, solving the problems that the city has from an honest and sincere conversation like the one today”, assured Juan Daniel Oviedo, amidst the emotion.
His statements to the Colombian press came after the end of the athletic race to which he summoned his supporters and followers, who did not hesitate to support him in this unusual way of launching himself as a candidate to lead the largest -and chaotic- city in the country.

Perhaps one of the main bets that the next president will have will be to define the future of the Bogotá metro after the fight between the mayor Claudia López and the president Gustavo Petro, on whether to keep it high or underground. In this regard, Oviedo described the situation as “sad” and “disappointing” and announced what he will do if he becomes the replacement for the current mayor; yes, he threw darts at the Executive.
“We are not obsessed with whether it is aerial or underground, but that it is a project that respects this principle that we want to value in our protest, which is to build on what has been built. It is disappointing that in the National Development Plan the national government manifests its interventionist tone, that it wants to have a majority position in the boards of directors of the transport systems that it co-finances, and at the same time authorizes the modification of the Land Management Plan, which was one of the advances where Bogotá already has shares in the metro”, said Oviedo.
