A British police officer has been sentenced to 36 life sentences. David Carrick has been found guilty of 24 rapes, among other things.
Carrick contacted his victims through dating sites, then took the women to his home or a hotel room to rape and assault them. He beat the women with a belt and locked them in small rooms. He also determined what they ate and when they slept.
The officer abused his position to gain the women’s trust and told women that no one would believe their story about a respected officer like him. The judge stated that the former agent “monstrously abused women behind a facade of decency and reliability”.
Fierce criticism
The London police force has been criticized for its handling of the Carrick case. Between 2000 and 2021, he was accused of rape and other crimes nine times before, but nothing was done about it. When these nine allegations came out, the force apologized, but Carrick was merely suspended.
Last year another report was published by the regulator with revelations about bullying, racism and misogyny within the London police force. The reason for the report was the rape and death of Sarah Everard.
