Acapulco, located one position below Tijuana, in Baja California, with 110.5 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, is classified as the second most violent city in the world, according to a ranking by the international consulting firm Statista, which evaluates the rate of murders in 50 cities of the world.
Although in the last 10 months the authorities implemented operations with federal and state forces to monitor the streets, the violence in this port is unstoppable: in the first half of 2022, Acapulco added 213 intentional homicides, according to the Executive Secretariat of the System National Public Security (SESNSP).
More than 35 homicides occurred in the first half of January 2023, thus, in less than two weeks, the drug war in Acapulco left 35 dead. On Sunday, January 8, under a bridge on the Mexico-Acapulco highway, in the town of San Martín “El Jovero”, the police found 5 dismembered and bagged corpses inside a car that had been burned.

In the town of Xaltianguis, north of the port, two other men were murdered, the Prosecutor’s Office reported on Monday. Xaltianguis has been contested by rival gangs, some of which are believed to have ties to drug cartels. On Tuesday, January 3, a bag with human remains had been found at the exit to Pie de la Cuesta, and the head of a woman appeared inside a cardboard box in the “La Laja” subdivision.
On Sunday the 15th, the relatives of Larry “N”, a dismembered man wrapped in sacks whose remains were dumped in the tourist town of San Andrés Playa Encantada, prevented the action of the police and military who appeared at the scene, and took Larry’s chunks in a wheelbarrow.
The following day, the body of a man with his throat cut was found in the “La Fábrica” neighborhood, in front of the Central Market of the city. And at the same time, two more corpses appeared on the Diamante Viaduct. The victims were handcuffed and with traces of torture. These cases are just some of the dozens of deaths that are added every day to the alarming figures of violence in the state.
