The tennis player Nick Kyrgios avoided being convicted after pleading guilty to assaulting Chiara Passari, her former partner, by pushing her to the ground after an argument in January 2021.

Judge Jane Campbell argued that Kyrgios was not convicted because the offense was less than serious for ordinary assault, and that it was not premeditated, calling it a “single act of stupidity.”
“An isolated incident”: Kyrgios’ lawyers
Kyrgios’ lawyers appealed that, for mental health reasons, the assault was considered isolated and off-site.
Psychologist Sam Borenstein stated that Kyrgios suffered from recurrent major depressionwhich produced thoughts of self-harm and suicidal ideas.
Borenstein added that the player has suffered strong episodes of depression, and that he has had periods of drug and alcohol use.
