Boluarte defends the early elections to appease the protests that have left 48 dead since the dismissal and arrest of Castillo after he tried to dissolve Congress and rule by decree.

Parallel to the political crisis, protests persist with road blockades that have caused fuel shortages such as domestic gas in various regions, including Tacna.

Alonso Cárdenas, professor of Political Science at the Antonio Ruiz de Montoya University (UARM), said that this new rejection marked “the total divorce between the political class and the citizenry.”

In the march on Wednesday, Peruvian flags and wiphalas (the seven-color flag of the Andean peoples) abounded. “If Dina does not resign from Lima, she will die of hunger,” shouted peasants from Ayapata, in Puno, a mining and farming region.

The leftist congressmen applauded the rejection of the bill presented by the Fuerza Popular party, but presented another text in which they want it to be approved with the referendum by the constituent assembly.

The rejected text contemplated anticipating the general elections for next December and that the new authorities would take office in May 2024.

“The purpose of this proposal is only one, we have advanced this issue because our country is bleeding to death,” warned Fujimori parliamentarian Hernando Guerra García.

After assuming command of the country on December 7 as interim president after the removal of leftist Pedro Castillo, Dina Boluarte said she would end her official term in 2026, but the outbreak of protests demanding her resignation led her to cut the term to April. of 2024 and later propose to carry them out this same year.

After the rejection of the Fuerza Popular proposal, Dina Boluarte issued a message on her Twitter account where she regretted “that Congress has not reached the necessary consensus to advance the elections” and reiterated that she will “immediately” present a bill where she insists on his plan to hold a general election this year.

I regret that Congress has not reached the necessary consensus to advance the elections. As I announced in the last message to the Nation, we will immediately present the bill so that Peruvians can democratically elect their authorities in 2023.

The Congress of the Republic once again rejected the bill that contemplated general elections in 2023, amid a wave of protests against President Dina Boluarte and parliamentarians that has left more than 50 dead in seven weeks.

The plenary session of Parliament rejected with 54 votes in favor, 68 against and two abstentions the second proposal in a week – and the third since December – to anticipate the elections in 2023. The project needed 87 votes to be approved.
