The Public Prosecution Service is appealing against the verdict in the case against Virus Truth leader Willem Engel.
Engel was sentenced last month to a one-month suspended sentence, with two years’ probation. In one case, he was found guilty of sedition, or inciting criminal behavior. He was acquitted of five other charges against him. Engel also appealed against the verdict.
The Public Prosecution Service believes that the acquittal is unjustified in parts:
Engel, 45, from Rotterdam, was prosecuted for a series of corona-related messages on social media. In November, the Public Prosecution Service demanded 180 hours of community service and a suspended prison sentence of three months.
With the sentence, the judge said he wanted to prevent Engel from making inflammatory comments again. It also had to make it clear that it “is not tolerated” to ignore authorities.
