More than 400 cases of priests who sexually abused minors. That is the result of the last report of The Abuse NetworkItaly’s main campaign group that has been collecting complaints of sexual abuse cases directly from victims for 13 years.
Given the absence of official figures, the association led by Francesco Zanardi -himself a survivor of abuse-, which made the report public on Wednesday, is the only one that has managed to monitor the magnitude of the phenomenon.
The group has sent the document to the Italian authorities to encourage them to launch an independent investigation, and estimates that the total number of cases could exceed the records of other countries.
“If a long period of time is taken into account, as France did, where some 300,000 victims of abuse were identified, here in Italy the figures could be more than double. The situation here is very serious and that is why the institutions are afraid to reveal the truth light”, says Ludovica Eugenio, editor of the weekly magazine “Adista”.
Eca Globalthe international organization against clergy abuse, recently called for the issue of sexual abuse to be addressed at a European level.
In 2019, the United Nations They called on Italy to launch an independent and impartial investigation into clerical sexual abuse, but the request has yet to be heard.
