McLaren can call on Mick Schumacher as reserve driver for the coming Formula 1 season. The British team has signed a deal with Mercedes to use him if necessary.
The 23-year-old Schumacher can play for both teams due to the agreements between Mercedes and McLaren. At Mercedes, the German will be third driver behind Lewis Hamilton and George Russell next season. If one of the two fails, the young German is normally the replacement.
Schumacher drove for Haas for the last two years, but his expiring contract was not extended due to disappointing performance. Before that, he was part of the talent program of Ferrari, the team where his father Michael Schumacher became world champion five times.
At McLaren, Schumacher will meet team boss Andrea Stella, who worked closely with his father as a Ferrari engineer in the past. With the British team, Schumacher will be reserve behind regular drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
The new Formula 1 season starts on March 5 with the Bahrain Grand Prix. The test days in the same country are scheduled a week earlier.
