It was the moment when Viene felt the irrational blow of jihadism and an Austrian jury is deliberating on the involvement of six defendants. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, all of them, between the ages of 22 and 32, helped or influenced Kujtim Fejzulai, a sympathizer of the Islamic State group, while preparing for the attack that he perpetrated in November 2020, which left four dead. Now they face charges that include participation in attacks and membership in a terrorist organization. The trial began in October of last year and is now facing its final stretch.
The attack took place in a popular nightlife district in Vienna. Fejzulai opened fire with a Kalashnikov rifle. Eventually, security forces tracked him down and shot him dead. A police officer was among the 23 people injured in the shooting. The six defendants are expected to hear a verdict on Wednesday.
