Schlenker, with his wife Patricia
Alan Schlenker says he knows he’s going to die in jail. That his last hope is that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, which has been studying his case for three years, rule in his favor and that for now does not seem to be going to happen. When told that his life sentence expires in 25 years since he’s already served 10 seasons behind bars, he bitterly repeats that this means he’s going to die in jail. Even so, and knowing what fate he has ahead of him, the former leader of Los Borrachos del Tablón made the decision to become a father again (he has a 10-year-old son from his first marriage).

He communicated it on his social networks and confirms it to Infobae: his wife Patricia is undergoing a six-month pregnancy that was planned even though he knows that he will be a perpetually absent father. When he is asked why, with that destiny, they decided to bring a child into the world, he affirms: “It is a life project that we have with Patri. She is from La Plata, we met when I was in the Azul prison six years ago and in 2019 she came to Trelew with her daughter and her nephews. We fell in love, we got married and now we go one step further. Our idea was to celebrate the marriage in March 2020, but with the pandemic we had to postpone everything for two years. We finally got married in prison last year and we decided to go a step further than it had to be now because of her age. I know that I have everything against me, I bet that the Inter-American Commission will give me a chance, because otherwise I will never see my son grow up, but I draw strength from where there is none to continue forward. I try to make the wall that separates me from the outside as thin as possible and this also has to do with that. Even when they make my life impossible I don’t let myself fall. What’s more, I know that they won’t even let me witness the delivery, arguing that I could escape. And that is unusual because I was always entitled, because between the time they sentenced me to life and they confirmed my sentence, two years passed in which I was free and I was able to escape and I never did, but I know that they will prevent me from doing anything. In fact, I am the only one of those convicted of Gonzalo Acro’s crime who is in a prison far from his family. My brother is in Marcos Paz, others are in Ezeiza and they sent me to the worst prison in Argentina, where I almost died the first year, where I can’t study, where life becomes impossible for you. But I still bet on starting a family.”
Schlenker can be seen between resigned and hopeful depending on the subject in question. He is far from that leader of the barra brava who defied everyone, but the system does not seem to have completely broken him either, as it happens with many convicts who know that their future lies in living all the time in a three-by-three room with a latrine like every bathroom. In fact, in addition to the marriage and the unborn child, last year he undertook an economic activity, Los Borrachos del Tablón wines, which he assures is doing very well: “Luckily there are many who want to have the wine that represents what River was for We. We have already sold the product in 20 Argentine provinces and next month we will open our first store on the street in Belgrano, on Pampa street between Arcos and O’Higgins, where in addition to wine we will sell clothing and several surprises, all with the brand LBT, which is the one we have registered. I need to do things to not get depressed and continue fighting every day with this unfair reality that I am living, because I was accused of instigating Luna over the phone and later when they discovered that there were no calls between my cell phone and his, they put me on that I instigated it in a pizzeria and I could never defend myself against it, which was also false. That is why I went to the Inter-American Commission by myself, because they are violating the principle of consistency. It’s a scandal, even I, with the six law courses I studied in the Azul jail, realized it and I’m defending myself alone, without a lawyer. But hey, they’ve had the case for three years and they haven’t spoken and I can’t throw myself in the cell to die waiting for that, so I’m doing things. And look, they make my life impossible. I eat? I’ll give you an example: here there are visits two days a week and my wife’s pregnancy (she’s six months old) is not given priority, they leave her standing for hours and so she can only come once. Everything they do to me is very treacherous and although every minute of the confinement hurts me, I draw strength from where I don’t have to carry on ”.

Schlenker is, depending on how you look at it, in the sweet or bitter wait. The fact that his son will be born in three months, that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights will ever rule, either in favor or against him, but that it rule, and the almost zero possibility that he will be transferred to prison. “This is hell, the worst prison in the country. I asked to go back to Azul, where he could study because he has a university center, where he ran the garden and nothing. I requested a transfer to the Santa Rosa prison, La Pampa, to be close to my father who is 85 years old and so he can visit me. And nothing. They have me here, trying to break me like the rest. But I get strength from where I can to continue resisting, ”he says as he hopes to become a father again even knowing that he will almost certainly be a perpetually absent father.
