Russia is preparing to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Red Army’s victory in the Battle of Stalingrad. President Vladimir Putin will chair this Thursday the commemorative events in the city of Volgograd, the former Stalingrad between 1925 and 1961.
There they have just inaugurated the busts of Stalin and two Soviet commanders
“In hostile countries, all our monuments that are associated with the name of the Soviet soldier are being destroyed. Our country has taken a different course. Our country is taking measures to preserve the memory of the Great Patriotic War,” said Alexander Bloshkin, a spokesman for the the Volgograd Regional Duma.
This 80th anniversary is celebrated in the midst of the invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow presents as “denazification”.
Stalingrad is one of the bloodiest battles in history. More than two million Soviet and German soldiers died in it.
