Marco van Ginkel left PSV on the last day of the winter transfer market. The midfielder returns to his old childhood sweetheart Vitesse after ten years, De Gelderlander, the ED and VI report.
Thirty-year-old Van Ginkel played sporadically at PSV this season, partly due to injuries. The attacking midfielder played only 54 minutes for Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team. Even after the departure of Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke, there was little perspective for him.
On the last day of the transfer market, Vitesse reported to PSV to take over Van Ginkel. The deal was finalized in the last minutes of Deadline Day, allowing the midfielder to make his comeback in Arnhem after his departure in 2013.
At Vitesse, Van Ginkel is reunited with Davy Pröpper, who recently made his comeback after having stopped for a year. Pröpper and Van Ginkel are good friends and also played together at PSV. Former PSV players Cocu and Nicolas Isimat-Mirin also work in Arnhem.

Van Ginkel was a trendsetter in Arnhem
Van Ginkel was picked up by Vitesse at the age of eleven and grew into a taste maker with his passes and assists. In 2013 he was sold to Chelsea for just under 10 million euros. Partly due to persistent injuries, he never broke through in London.
Van Ginkel was subsequently loaned out to PSV three times. That was successful two out of three times: in 2016 and 2018 he became champion under Cocu with the team from Eindhoven. In 2021 he moved to Brabant on a free transfer, but he was never able to repeat his previous successes.
Van Ginkel is the fourth winter reinforcement for Vitesse, after Isimat-Mirin (clubless), Dominik Oroz (Sturm Graz, end of lease) and Pröpper. The club can make good use of the reinforcements in the battle for enforcement in the Eredivisie. Vitesse occupies thirteenth place and is four points above the relegation zone.
