Manuel López Niebla entered the sea in Benito Juárez, Sonora, in search of a type of mollusk with which he could make a little money. For the Mexican fisherman it was another day at work, but he did not know that a fatal incident awaited him: a white shark would brutally attack him until it took his life.
They captured “El Güero Claudio”, a subject who ordered a taco maker from Sonora to be beaten “for not selling him food”
Eugenio “N” was identified as the intellectual author of the physical attack. Along with him, three other people were arrested with 600 fentanyl pills.
This is the first fatal shark attack that has been recorded in 2023. The events were recorded in Tobari Bay, where López used to dive. He regularly looked for scallops, one of the most coveted products in seafood restaurants. Despite the fact that in previous days he had been alerted to the presence of white sharks, the approximately 50-year-old man got ready to fish.
It was January 5th and Manuel, also known as “Meño”, started diving in the open sea. To collect the scallops, one had to go to a depth of between 11 and 18 meters, with the risk that the turbulence generated would attract the attention of sharks. The fisherman was accompanied by two other people on board the boat when he was violently attacked.

It was around 11:30 a.m. and a white shark about 6 meters in length began to stalk the area where Manuel was. But the diver from Paredón Colorado did not have time to take cover and the enormous whitetip rammed him. According to witnesses, with one bite the animal tore off his head and managed to injure both of his shoulders.
They reported another case of possible extortion in Sonora: mechanics were “whipped with boards”
The State Prosecutor’s Office reported that investigations into the events that occurred in Caborca have already begun, because it involved “damage to human dignity.”
The grotesque scene horrified the fishermen who could do little to save Manuel’s life. Due to the seriousness of the injuries, López died almost immediately in the place where he used to go. This generated alert among the divers in the area, who had already been warned about the stalking of great white sharks.
According to the fisherman José Bernal, some of his companions had not gone out to sea for several days due to the presence of sharks, he told local media. It is presumed that the financial situation of “Meño” would have led him to ignore it, so he tried to collect shellfish.
Before the dissemination of cases, the Sonora prosecutor’s office assured that extortion was not a problem in the entity
The extortions of the workers of establishments and businesses in the state of Sonora continue despite the fact that the State Prosecutor’s Office had minimized it
In February 2022 another similar incident occurred in Sonora. Víctor Estrella, a 56-year-old man, was attacked by a shark in the port of Yavaros, located in the municipality of Huatabampo. Like Manuel, he was looking for an ax callus in deep water when he was bitten by the animal. The injuries caused to his lower extremities caused him to bleed to death and lose his life.
Guadalupe Island in Baja California is one of the best places in the world to observe great white sharks (Photo: CONANP)
During December and January it is the period in which it is more frequent to see white sharks in the Gulf of California, since they are the months when pregnant females enter the area. Sea lions are one of the main targets of these animals due to their high caloric content.
That is why when some fishermen catch sea lions in their nets, white sharks begin to approach their boats, which represents a risk for their crews. Local residents have advised divers not to wear black neoprene suits, since at a certain distance they could be mistaken for a seal. Thus, they have suggested painting patterns on their suits to avoid a possible attack.
According to the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, the Isla de Guadalupe, Baja California, is home to the largest number of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) and is one of the best places in the world for their observation.
In Mexico, the white shark is in the threatened category, which is why it is protected by NOM-029-PESC-2006, so that its capture or the retention of live or dead specimens is prohibited. Likewise, they cannot be the object of human consumption or commercialization.
