OAS Mission in Peru
This Monday, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved the draft “Declaration on recent events” due to the political crisis that the country is going through. In this document, he asked the Peruvian authorities to call general elections “prompt.”
“His firm call to the Peruvian authorities to ensure democratic governance and institutionality through the prompt holding of fair, free and transparent general elections, with international electoral observation,” reads the official letter.
This resolution is supported by all OAS member countries, except El Salvador. Likewise, it was presented by Colombia together with Haiti, Antigua, Barbuda and Honduras, as confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana Cecilia Gervasi.
Congressmen speak out on Dina Boluarte’s message to the OAS and early elections
Legislators point out that the date established by Congress must be respected for general elections to be held in April 2024; while another group proposes that they be carried out in October 2023.
The countries also expressed their “concern” about the “excessive use of force and violations of academic spaces”, because weeks ago the National Police of Peru entered the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos to arrest people who they had arrived from other provinces to join the mobilizations.
Permanent Council of the Organization of American States evaluated the political crisis that the country is going through.
They also indicated their “commitment to human rights, democracy and the rule of law” in the country. In addition, they point out their dismay at the wave of violence that has been reported close to two months into the administration of Dina Boluarte, as a result 58 people died, according to information from the Ombudsman’s Office.
Advancement of 2023 elections: left and right benches unite to vote against the reconsideration
Shortly after knowing what the decision of the Congress of the Republic will be, there are parties that will not change their minds and will insist on rejecting the constitutional project.
Given this, they called on citizens to carry out the marches peacefully after learning of the material damage, for which they asked that the dialogue between both parties be resumed to overcome this crisis.
Through the official letter, they asked that “effective” measures be adopted so that everything about “acts of violence and destruction” reported in the country is reported. In the same way, they called for the “integrity and due process” of the citizens detained during these protests to be respected and guaranteed.
Alejandro Cavero does not agree with the advancement of elections for 2023
The legislator did not hesitate to criticize President Dina Boluarte by assuring that “she is incapable of governing the country.”
“In this sense, it takes note of the decision of the Peruvian government to provide the necessary facilities to the Public Ministry to investigate and identify; prosecute and punish, when appropriate, those responsible for the effects on human rights, life, integrity and damage to public and private property”, they mention.
