League 1: Safap rejected that the tournament start only with some clubs
Roberto Silva, president of the Association of Professional Soccer Players of Peru (Safap), explained the position of the institution regarding the conflict over the television rights of Liga 1 and clarified the tenor of the statement issued on Monday, January 30.
League 1: Mannucci denounces GOLPERU’s non-payment of payment and urges him to broadcast his matches
The Trujillo team regretted that the Peru Football Consortium has preferential treatment with other teams, when trying to recover its television rights and at the same time failing to comply with the one it maintains with the ‘Tricolor’ until 2025.
The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF), the Football Consortium (GOLPERU) and the participating clubs of League 1 are in conflict over the right to broadcast Peruvian football.
11 of the 19 Liga 1 clubs are aligned with the FPF and the company 1190 Sports that won the tender for the transmission of their home matches. The other 8 teams, including Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes, on the contrary, have a contractual relationship with GOLPERU in force and announced that they will not appear in the championship as a protest measure.
Delegate of Alianza Lima explained the differences between the TV rights plan of GOLPERU and the FPF
Héctor Ordóñez implied that the project of the federation and company is very unreliable and defended the Consorcio Fútbol Perú.
Roberto Silva referred to the possibility that the Opening Tournament be played only with the clubs with a contract with the company 1190 Sports.
“We do not see it as a viable scenario for the tournament to start with just a few, if they asked my opinion it would be a resounding ‘no’, you cannot leave some teams out and expect the tournament to start,” said the president of Safap.
Safap recommended that the FPF allow Consorcio to broadcast the League 1 matches
The Soccer Players Association requested that the eight clubs that signed with GOLPERU have no problems televising their matches.
The top manager of the players’ union affirmed that the FPF has the power to resolve the differences because they requested the variation of the precautionary measure and now explicitly states that the Federation is the entity that authorizes the operators that can broadcast the matches of the League 1.
“The precautionary measure gives the FPF the power to decide, for us it is an opportunity because it is finally in the hands of the Federation now that the championship begins, regardless of social issues, without any inconvenience. It seemed like an opportunity to us because the FPF has the handle of the frying pan to determine if the clubs can compete or not, I think it depends on the will of the FPF”, stated Silva.

In addition, he made reference to GOLPERU’s non-payment with some Liga 1 clubs that has led to a formal claim by the footballers before the Safap union.
“Municipal is having problems because the Consortium has not paid them in December or January, the players have filed their complaint. We know the problems of the Boys, but nothing has to do with one thing with the other. This is not an attack on the Federation, the intention of the message is a suggestion, we as a union are interested in the viability of soccer players and their contracts, their work and their performance as athletes, it is their livelihood and we cannot take sides. We have a position because we have our own beliefs and our own investigations, but we do not take sides because we have to defend the interests of the soccer players as a whole,” added the former soccer player.
Silva reaffirmed his position before a possible strike of soccer players in case the differences between the organizations regarding television rights affect the work of their members.
“The (strike) is always evaluated because it is a right that the workers have, but for that something factual has to happen, for the damage to the workers to materialize and today it has not materialized, it is a commercial issue between the clubs, the houses television stations and the Federation. The day that the players, as a result of this problem, have problems fulfilling their contracts or anything related to work, then we have to sit down and say that we cannot allow this to happen, ”he assured.
Silva stressed that Safap plays a “secondary” role in the problems of the clubs, the Federation and the Football Consortium. Likewise, he pointed out that the institution he directs will seek to act as a “mediator” if necessary.
