Dylan Groenewegen just failed to book his second stage victory in the Tour of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. The Dutchman was beaten in the second leg by the Italian Jonathan Milan.
Groenewegen was a few centimeters short of the stage victory in the sprint of a first group. The photo finish showed that Milan crossed the line just a little earlier than the 29-year-old rider of Jayco AlUla. Cees Bol finished third at an appropriate distance.
In the 184-kilometer flat stage from Winter Park to Shalal Sijlyat Rocks, the peloton broke in two in the closing stages. Groenewegen was in the front group with some teammates, but could not finish it in the sprint.
On Monday, Groenewegen recorded his first victory of the season in the opening stage of the Tour of Saudi Arabia. Then he punctured three times, but nevertheless grabbed the victory.
Groenewegen remains in the lead in the general classification. The Amsterdammer, who is riding his first race of the season in Saudi Arabia, is six seconds ahead of number two Milan. Bol is fourth at twelve seconds.
The Tour of Saudi Arabia has a total of five stages and lasts until Friday. The stage race continues on Wednesday with a hilly stage over 159.2 kilometers from Al Manshiya Train Station to Abu Rakah.
