Sparta Rotterdam lost its tastemaker Sven Mijnans to AZ on Monday on the final day of the winter transfer market. The midfielder has signed for 5.5 years in Alkmaar, both clubs announce.
Feyenoord, PSV, FC Twente and clubs in the Bundesliga previously also showed interest in 22-year-old Mijnans, but AZ turned out to be the most decisive of all those clubs. According to VI, the Alkmaarders pay 2.5 million euros for the midfielder, who was under contract with Sparta until mid-2024.
With the departure of Mijnans, Sparta loses one of its stars. The midfielder scored three times this season and provided five assists for the team of trainer Maurice Steijn. Partly due to his contribution, Sparta is surprisingly sixth in the Eredivisie.
“We knew that there was a lot of interest in Sven and that it would not be easy to keep him longer at Het Kasteel,” said technical director Gerard Nijkamp of Sparta Rotterdam. “This is a great step in his career for him.”

Mijnans still played with amateurs in 2019
Mijnans is making a special advance as a footballer. The South Hollander played for the amateurs of VV Spijkenisse from the age of sixteen to the age of eighteen. Then he was picked up by Sparta Rotterdam. After two years in Jong Sparta, he has been part of the first team since 2020.
With the arrival of Mijnans, AZ has received its third winter purchase. The number two in the Eredivisie previously brought attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic (6 million euros) and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan (500,000 euros).
Sparta Rotterdam is still looking for a replacement for Mijnans in the remaining hours of the transfer market. The transfer market in the Netherlands closes at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. Follow the latest developments of Deadline Day in our live blog.
