Sarina Wiegman was named Sports Personality of the Year at a meeting of the Dutch Sports Press (NSP) in Rijswijk on Monday evening. The 53-year-old Dutch won the European title last summer as national coach of England.
Wiegman says he is “super honored” with the prize. “First of all, it says that women’s football has been very much in the publicity, and I would like to thank the media for that. It is of course a team effort of players and staff, but if you can propagate that and it is appreciated in this way, then I am I’m proud of that.”
“I don’t do very much special. I just tell what we do and why we do things, that is apparently regarded as something special,” the Hague herself remains sober about her media appearances.
Under Wiegman, England won all matches at the European Championship, including the final against Germany at a sold-out Wembley (2-1 after extra time). It was the first time in 56 years that an English football team won a European Championship or World Cup for men or women. Wiegman also became the first coach (both men’s and women’s) to win the European Championship twice.

Wiegman has already won several prizes
Earlier this year, Wiegman already seized the European Coach Award – presented by UEFA – and the Great Coaching Moment of the Year, an award for the moment of the year for coaches in England. She was also appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). That is the third highest royal honor.
Remarkably enough, Wiegman did not win the prizes at the Dutch Sports Gala at the end of 2022. For the prize of Dutch coach of the year, the professional jury and the athletes preferred Jeroen Otter, who won three gold medals as national coach of the short track team at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Later in the evening, the Sports Journalist of the Year, the Scoop of the Year, the Sports Photo of the Year and the Sports Journalism Talent of the Year will also be announced at the gala.
