Michael van Gerwen, Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenbode were all eliminated in the quarterfinals of The Masters on Sunday. Van Gerwen lost to Rob Cross (10-7), Noppert went down against Michael Smith (10-5) and Van Duijvenbode had to admit his superior in Chris Dobey (10-5).
The 33-year-old Van Gerwen was behind the facts almost the entire game in his match against Cross. ‘Mighty Mike’ was already 3-1 behind after four legs and could no longer reduce that margin. Van Gerwen, five-time winner in Milton Keynes, had a better average than Cross (96.02) with 99.02.
The 32-year-old Noppert started well against Smith, who has also been in first place on the PDC Order of Merit since his world title. The Frisian took a 3-1 lead, but then lost five legs in a row. That made the difference in the game. Noppert recorded an average of 97.13 per three arrows. Smith was well above that with an average of 103.33.
Van Duijvenbode was equal in the first eight legs (4-4) against Dobey, but then Dobey ran away. The number thirteen on the PDC Order of Merit won only one more leg against Dobey, who is eight places lower, and lost 10-5.
Van Duijvenbode, who recorded an average of 94.58, had caused a stunt on Saturday by beating Gerwyn Price in the second round. In the first round Van Duijvenbode was too strong for the Pole Krzysztof Ratajski.
Smith and Dobey will face each other in the first semi-final on Sunday evening around 8 p.m. Peter Wright and Cross then compete for the remaining final spot. Defending champion Joe Cullen was already eliminated on Friday.
