The EU-Mercosur agreement marks Scholz’s visit to Argentina

Olaf Scholz culminates the first stop on his trip through Latin America. The central axis of the meeting between the German chancellor and the Argentine president has been the importance of specifying as soon as possible the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union that both parties culminated in 2019 after twenty years of negotiations.

“We must work together so that the negotiations come to fruition. Surely there are many different and concrete aspects to talk about in a practical way and that must be done, but the most important thing is that it does not take so many more years, but that it can be to do quickly and agilely”, assured the head of the German Government.

Alberto Fernandez, President of Argentina, has expressed his wish that “we do not continue dragging out the discussion and that we can quickly reach an agreement and put it into operation. This will be good for the EU economy and for Mercosur, we are absolutely convinced that it.”

Scholz has also shown his willingness, after the German authorization to send Leopard 2 tanks to kyiv, that the Russian invasion of Ukraine does not end up involving NATO. The foreign minister is already in Chile and will end his tour in Brazil.
