Dirk van Duijvenbode booked a great victory over Gerwyn Price on Saturday in Milton Keynes at The Masters. ‘Aubergenius’ won 10-8 against the single world champion and is therefore in the quarterfinals of the first major tournament of the year.
Thirty-year-old Van Duijvenbode, who recorded an average of 96.28 per three arrows, started energetically against Price (average of 95.26) and took a 5-2 lead after seven legs. Price then won four legs in a row to take back the initiative.
Van Duijvenbode managed to recover and broke Price in the fourteenth leg, giving him an 8-6 lead. The number thirteen on the PDC Order of Merit eventually needed six match darts to decide the match, but won against Price for the second time in his career.
In his next match, Van Duijvenbode will face Chris Dobey, who was 10-8 too strong for his English compatriot Luke Humphries earlier in the evening. Van Duijvenbode had reached the last sixteen on Friday by beating the Polish Krzysztof Ratajski in the first round: 6-3.
Earlier in the day Danny Noppert also joined the last eight. ‘The Freeze’ was 10-9 too strong for Stephen Bunting and will play against world champion Michael Smith or Ross Smith, the number seventeen of the PDC Order of Merit, on Sunday.
Michael van Gerwen, five-time winner of The Masters, also has a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals. ‘Mighty Mike’ will play against the Portuguese José de Sousa later on Saturday evening around 10.50 pm.
