A dress from the British Princess Diana has fetched $ 604,800 at an auction in New York, or more than 556,000 euros. That is five times as much as auction house Sotheby’s had expected in advance.
It is a purple velvet strapless dress by designer Victor Edelstein, who often made dresses for Diana. Reportedly it was one of her favorite pieces of clothing.
The princess wore the dress for an official royal portrait in 1991. She also wore it for a photo shoot for Vanity Fair magazine in 1997, the year she died in an accident in Paris.
According to Sotheby’s, there were four serious candidates for the dress at the auction, who were bidding hard against each other. The final amount is the highest ever paid for a dress at auction, the company says. The new owner has not been disclosed.
More items belonging to prominent people were auctioned at the auction in New York. The most was paid for a shirt of the American basketball player Lebron James. It was hammered off for 3.7 million dollars (3.4 million euros).
