Asuncion, Jan. An agonizing 97th-minute goal converted from the penalty spot by Argentine-Paraguayan Héctor ‘Tito’ Villalba gave Libertad a 1-0 victory over Guaraní on Friday in the first day of the Paraguay Apertura Tournament.
Near the final whistle, the Uruguayan goalkeeper Rodrigo ‘Pupi’ Muñoz, who had had an outstanding performance, brought down the experienced striker Roque Santa Cruz in the area and the central judge Mario Díaz de Vivar sanctioned the free kick from 11 steps, which Villalba turned into a goal
The Gumarelo team dominated almost the entire game and the only reason that prevented a win was the performance of goalkeeper Muñoz, who stopped up to six shots with goal direction.
The Aboriginal team tried to open the scoring at the start of complementary time, through a cross shot by Uruguayan midfielder Víctor Dorrego, which passed very close to the goal defended by Rodrigo Morínigo.
But, Libertad knew how to control the ball for longer and won a long-suffering victory.
With this result, the team led by Daniel Garnero add their first three points at the start of the Paraguayan championship, which will continue this Saturday with the meetings between Sportivo Trinidense-Tacuary and Guaireña-Nacional.
The day continues on Sunday with the General Caballero-Resistencia and Cerro Porteño-Sportivo Ameliano matches. EFE
