This Friday, Sergio Agüero will be the star guest of the “Yellow Night”, the traditional event that Barcelona de Guayaquil has held since 1991, but which from 2016 had international presences and top-level retired soccer players. It is a special meeting that the Ecuadorian club will have together with its fans who will also bid farewell to Matías Oyola, one of their greatest idols.

El Kun has already arrived in Ecuador and was received with honors by the club’s president, Carlos Alejandro Alfaro Moreno, who is also an idol of Independiente, the club where Agüero made his debut in the First Division almost 20 years ago. Agüero received a special welcome with a replica of the World Cup, a cigar, three souvenirs with the colors of the Argentine national team and another with the Ecuadorian colors, and the message “welcome to Guayaquil.” The photo was taken by Kun who posted it on an Instagram story.

The Yellow Night is a party in Barcelona in Guayaquil that has been repeated for 32 years at each start of the season. In its early years, the focus of the event was the presentation of the squad with the additions for that year and it was used as a good opportunity for fans to welcome new players and also pay tribute to their idols.

Since 1996, an international friendly match began to be played and on that occasion it was the then Copa Libertadores champion, Gremio de Porto Alegre, who won 1-0. Then, the Colombian and Peruvian teams were the ones that received the most invitations to face the Torero, as Barcelona is known.

Although from 2016 the event took on extra football notoriety since they began to invite an international figure who has retired. In addition, they also have a dinner with the members of the club and activities planned by the Guayaquil institution. In 2017 it was Diego Forlán and Kaká did it in 2018. In 2019 and 2020 there were the two Italian world champions, Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro Del Piero. The guest always wears Barcelona’s anniversary number, which is why Kun will use 98, which are the years the club celebrates in 2023.

Finally, the farewell to Matías Oyola who retired from soccer is also announced, although he will have his official goodbye with the Toreros on this Yellow Night.
