The Dutch hockey players failed to qualify for the final of the World Cup on Friday. The team of national coach Jeroen Delmee lost to Belgium after shoot-outs, after the game had ended 2-2 in regular playing time.
Jip Janssen scored twice for the Orange. The defender opened the score from a penalty corner in the twelfth minute and shortly after the break made it 2-1 in the same way. In between, Tom Boon leveled the Belgians from a penalty corner.
Nicolas De Kerpel made it 2-2 at the end of the third quarter. Goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak then saved the Netherlands by deflecting a penalty shot from Boon, after which no more goals were scored. In the shoot-outs, Belgium eventually turned out to be the strongest.
The Netherlands was therefore unable to take revenge for the lost 2018 World Cup final against Belgium. Then, after a spectacular shoot-out series, the Belgians conquered the world title at the expense of the Orange.
In the consolation final, the Netherlands will play against Australia at 12:00 (Dutch time). ‘The Kookaburras’ lost in a spectacle with 4-3 to Germany. The Germans came back from a 3-2 deficit in the final phase and scored the decisive goal six seconds before the end. The final between Belgium and Germany starts on Sunday at 2.30 pm.

Janssen gives the Orange twice the lead
The Netherlands started the match well in the Kalinga Stadium. After an attempt by Koen Bijen had just gone wide in the opening phase, Delmee’s team took the lead in the twelfth minute via Janssen. He hit hard from a penalty corner.
The Netherlands continued on the same footing in the second quarter and came close to 2-0 a few times via Tjep Hoedemakers and Thijs van Dam. During the second quarter, Belgium came into the game better. A hit by Felix Denayer was still rejected, but shortly before the break Boon did score the equalizer from a penalty corner.
After the break, the Netherlands escaped a backlog. Teun Beins removed a bet from John-John Dohmen just before the line, after which the ball hit the post via Blaak. On the other hand, Janssen found the goal from a penalty corner: 2-1.

Blaak returns a penalty ball in the last quarter
The Belgians did not give up and came alongside again at the end of the third quarter. This time, De Kerpel batted in hard after Blaak had tapped a high ball towards the goal.
In the last quarter, the Orange once again escaped a deficit. Blaak stopped Boon’s penalty after Beins had tapped Florent Van Aubel on his stick. Even then, no more goals were scored, so shoot-outs had to make the decision.
In the shoot-out series, Belgium won 3-2. Van Dam, Terrance Pieters and Seve van Ass missed on behalf of the Netherlands. Blaak only reversed Tanguy Cosyns’ effort.
